What it does

Give it the race distance and how long the bird was on the wing, and it returns the velocity in m/min, with handy conversions to km/h, yards per minute and mph. It has three modes:

• Velocity from duration — enter distance and a flight time of hours, minutes and seconds.
• Velocity from times — enter the liberation time and the arrival time and it works out the duration for you.
• Arrival from speed — the reverse: enter a target speed and it predicts the arrival time. Useful on race morning to estimate when the first birds are due.

The formula

Worked example: a 350 km race (350,000 m) flown in 5 hours (300 minutes) = 350000 ÷ 300 ≈ 1166 m/min, or about 70 km/h.
